These emergency tips for water damage will assist you in taking the necessary actions to help you reduce secondary damage and increase the chances of successful restoration, before help arrives.

Sanitary water-clear:

DO: Shut off the source of water if possible or contact a qualified party to stop the water source.

DO: Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the dwelling when access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock.

DO: Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping.

DON'T: Do NOT enter rooms with standing water where there may be an electrical shock hazard.

DON'T: Do NOT enter affected areas if electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers or electrical equipment are exposed to water. ALWAYS avoid electrical shock hazards.

DON'T: Do NOT any colored items on wet carpets or floors as this may cause bleeding or staining.

Contaminated water-gray, black or sewage:

DO: Avoid ALL contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage in any affected areas.

DO: Wash your hands/any exposed areas of body/items thoroughly after contact with contaminated items.

DON'T: Do NOT spread contaminated water by walking through damaged or wet areas.

DON'T: Do NOT turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air. Use of any HVAC system or fans to “dry” the structure will spread contaminants into unaffected areas of the dwelling.

DON'T: Do NOT use products that are exposed to the contaminated area. (personal hygiene, etc.)

Note: If exposed to harmful waste, OSHA recommends a post-exposure medical evaluation. Consult your local health department or physician.
